Giving form to

Led creative direction and visual system development for an architectural lighting brand.

Overview

Overview

Focal Point designs architectural lighting where precision and restraint matter. The challenge was ensuring the brand communicated that same discipline clearly, consistently, and at scale.

The work also needed to solve a real customer problem: helping architects, engineers, and designers quickly understand a growing product range without outdated materials.

I worked closely with marketing leadership, engineering, sales, and external partners to balance clarity, craft, and business needs.

Designing clarity

within complexity

Designing clarity

Establishing a cohesive visual language

Focal Point’s products are technical by nature. The challenge was making detailed specifications easier to navigate, without losing the precision they require.

I developed a design framework grounded in quiet grids, deliberate spacing, and a restrained typographic hierarchy. Each decision prioritized legibility, hierarchy, and ease of use for designers working under real-world time constraints.

The system helped designers find what they needed quickly while reflecting the brand’s architectural sensibility.

Elevating a technical

tool into a brand object

Replacing binders with a single, durable solution

Architectural and engineering firms relied on large specification binders that were costly and often outdated. Working with senior leadership, I proposed replacing them with a single, comprehensive hardcover Specification Guide, updated annually.

At the time, no U.S. lighting manufacturer presented specifications this way, making it a deliberate risk. The result was a premium, all-in-one catalog that felt current and complete. The shift cut costs by roughly 50% and gave customers a clearer view of the full product offering.

Making light tangible through material expression

For the final volume, I designed a cover featuring Focal Point’s mission statement as a blind deboss. As light hits the surface, the text appears and recedes depending on viewing angle.

The cover became a physical metaphor for the brand’s commitment to illumination, turning a functional object into an expression of purpose.

Balancing performance and presence

I designed a family of product brochures built on a shared system of typography, grid, and photographic style. Each brochure tells its own story while remaining visually aligned with the broader brand.

I partnered with marketing on positioning, engineering on technical accuracy, and sales on audience needs.

Defining and executing a photographic language

I established and executed in-house product photography standards, defining lighting, composition, and retouching guidelines.

Over time, I became the sole photographer, shooting product and environmental imagery when possible. In other cases, I partnered with architectural firms and external photographers to license and curate imagery that met brand standards.

I also built and managed a library of more than 300 images, ensuring consistency across catalogs, brochures, presentations, and sales tools.

Building confidence through consistency

I helped guide the long-term evolution of Focal Point’s visual identity. Over time, the brand presence became more unified, premium, and confident.

Alignment across catalogs, photography, sales tools, and events helped teams work faster and clarified what Focal Point stood for.
